Emily Chumley

Robert and Betsy’s youngest child was Emily. When Emily was born in 1826 in Claiborne, Tennessee, her father, Robert, was 40, and her mother, Elizabeth, was 51. She died in sometime before August 1850 in Claiborne, Tennessee, at the age of 24. She married Riley Clark on January 1, 1850, in her hometown.

Little is known about Emily or Riley. We believe she died around the age of 24, sometime before Aug 1850 when census was taken. Their marriage record gives no more information than their names, the date, and the place, Claiborne County, Tennessee. [1]

From the Fulkerson papers, the Riley family were earlier settlers: Thomas Clark came to Lonesome Valley from Virginia about 1840. He married Sarah Connor. Among children: RILEY m. Emily Chumley. Note that Riley removed to Georgia. [2]

Riley C Clark died 14 March 1894 in or near Apison, James County (currently Hamilton County), Tennessee. After Emily Chumley died, he married a second time, wife unknown and had children; then married on 17 Jan. 1875 Julia B. Hill of Monroe County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Pleasant Hill and Myra Morrow who were married 14 Dec. 1841 in Monroe County, Tennessee. He and Julia had 8 more children while living in Catoosa County, Georgia. This information was all on his war record pension from serving in the Mexican War. He was a Private in Company 1 in the 4th Regiment of the Tennessee Volunteers, commanded by Captain J. H. Evans. He enlisted in Knoxville, Tennessee, July/August 1847 and was honorably discharged at Memphis, August 1848. He applied for his pension in November 1893 at age 65 in Catoosa County, Georgia before moving to Apison, James County, Tennessee. His post office was Graysville, Catoosa County, Georgia. He and Julia appear in the 1880 census of Catoosa County, Georgia.
