Malinda Chumley

MALINDA CHUMLEY was born in February 1821 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. She died on May 3, 1881, in Polk, Missouri, at the age of 60, and was buried in King, Missouri. She married John Slatten (son of Hiram Slatten and Sarah (last name unknown)) on September 6, 1845, in Claiborne County, Tennessee. [1] He died in 1860 in Polk County, Missouri. They had four children in 11 years.

John and Malinda, along with 2 young children who had been born in Claiborne County, Tennessee, were living in Polk County, Missouri, just 5 years after they were married. [2] The couple had 2 more children born in Missouri. In 1850, John and his father-in-law, Robert, were farming the land and they lived next to Malinda’s sister, Eliza and her family, who also were farmers. [3] John was granted 160 acres in Missouri, recorded at the land office in Springfield, Missouri on October 30, 1857, just 3 years before John died. [4]

Malinda, her sister Eliza Chumbley Lyngar, and their father Robert Chumley probably all came to Greene County, Missouri at the same time. They are all buried in the King family cemetery in Polk County, Missouri about 1 1/2 miles from the Lyngar farm.

After John died in 1860, Malinda lived in Walnut Grove, Missouri. She had 3 children at home and her personal estate value was $150. Her brother-in-law George and Elizabeth Slatten own the home next door, his estate value $500. [5] She moved back to Polk County, Missouri sometime before 1870.

The 1870 US Census revealed that Malinda now lived in Humansville, Jackson County, Missouri. She is listed as head of household, personal estate $150, son’s James and George live with her and worked on the farm. Neighbors: Her sister Eliza and husband JH Linger with their 4 children, Samuel and Mary Chumley, Hays, Claypoole, Goodman, Potter. [6]

We also found Malinda caring for her sister’s widowed husband, JH Lingar on the 1880 US Census. [7] He is listed as a farmer and Malinda is listed at keeping house. Neighbors include Campbell, Bowman, Anderson, Bloomer, and Goodman. Malinda passed away in May of 1881 and JH Lingar married his 2nd wife Mary Susan Anderson on 22 Sep 1881.

John Slatten and Malinda Chumley had the following children:

1. Robert W. Slatten was born on 05 Jun 1846 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. He died on 11 Apr 1868 in Polk County, Missouri (age 21, Buried at King Cemetery, Polk Co., MO: grave marker inscription: “Blest soldier rest thy warfare is o’er”).
   Robert W. Slatton served with the Union Army in the Civil War, 6th Regiment, Missouri Cavalry, Company: A, Rank In: Private, Rank Out: Corporal. [8] He died April 11, 1868. He was only 21 years old, never married. He was buried in King Cemetery in Polk County, Missouri. His grave marker inscription: “Blest soldier rest thy warfare is o’er.” [9]
2. Louis C. Slatten was born on 20 Aug 1848 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. He died on 23 Nov 1859 in Greene County, Missouri (age 11). No death record was found, and no cause of death is listed on Mortality Schedule index of 1850-1880. [10]
3. George B. Slatten was born on 03 Jan 1851 in Polk County, Missouri. He died on 12 Feb 1911 in Polk County, Missouri. He married Elizabeth V. Goodman, daughter of John Franklin Goodman and Orlena Jane Dobbs, on 28 Jan 1872 in Greene County, Missouri. [11] She was born on 27 Mar 1855 in Walnut Grove, Greene County, Missouri. She died on 13 Aug 1922 in Coalinga, Fresno County, California. They had 3 sons and 3 daughters between 1881 and 1896.
   George was a farmer. He died after injuries he suffered from falling from a barn loft. He was 60 years. He and his wife Elizabeth are buried in Turkey Creek Cemetery in Polk County, Missouri. [12]

4. James C. Slatten was born in 1857 in Polk County, Missouri. He married Mary Poe on 21 Aug 1878 in Greene County, Missouri. [13] Mary was born about 1853 in North Carolina. The Research Group was unable to find much information about James and Mary. In fact, it has not been found when either of them died or if they had any children.
